Getaway House:
a minimalist forest retreat
Claesson Koivisto Rune
An Intimate Refuge
Surrounded by forest and situated on the shore of a Swedish lake, the Getaway House was conceived as a true refuge — a place for escape and introspection. Its unique location features steeply sloping terrain and difficult access. However, this challenging site not only enhances the property’s seclusion but also created a significant hurdle during construction. The design required minimalist glazing systems.
Optimizing the view: geometry and orientation
The project is composed of four parallel cubic volumes, each with a distinct function. One volume is the main dwelling (which includes a lowered roof terrace), while others accomodate the guest rooms, the sauna, and the garage.
Furthermore, these volumes are oriented at 45º angle relative to the lake. This intentional geometric rotation ensures that two façades of each volume face the water. Consequently, the design optimizes panoramic views while simultaneously preventing direct glass reflections on the lake’s surface.
Materials and constructive honesty
Two primary materials dominate the project: glass and galvanized steel. Claesson Koivisto Rune chose them for their robustness and low-maintenance requirements. Thus, material honesty guides the selection, evident in the decision to leave the zinc untreated. Over time, it will slowly oxidize. This process develops a natural patina, which reinforces the architecture’s connection to the ever-changing environment.
Minimalist Glazing and framing the view
The panoramah! ah!38 sliding system offers unparalleled views of the surrounding landscape. The architects incorporated this system into the openings. This minimalist glazing solution is an exterior opening system that delivers a balanced combination of thermal and acoustic performance, suitable for all climates. Moreover, it provides remarkable flexibility in the modular composition of openings.
The Getaway House is more than just a home — it offers an experience. The profound respect for the site and the honesty of its materials define this project. Therefore, Claesson Koivisto Rune masterfully reveals how contemporary architecture can engage in a meaningful and minimalist dialogue with the surrounding natural landscape.
